The programme
  • The destination of our excursion is the historical city of Ephesus, one of the most popular archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. To fully grasp the magnificence of the place, just think that Ephesus was the third most powerful city of the ancient world after Rome and Alexandria. In addition, as it was the capital of the Roman province of Asia, it was the second largest city of the entire empire for a long time.
  • Our visit will take us to admire the numerous beauties that have survived to this day, more or less affected and damaged by time and events, a testimony to the importance and richness of this centre. We will visit the Library of Celsus , the Gymnasium and the foundations of what was once probably a huge stadium.
  • Upon crossing through the city gate, we will find ourselves on the Via Arcadiana, a wonderful road lined with marble columns.
  • This majestic road connects the ancient port and thermal baths to the incredible Great Theatre, carved in the slopes of Mount Pion with a seating capacity of 24,000 and which was used for the festival of Artemis, which was celebrated every year in April.
  • The Marble Road winds its way in front of this structure, followed by the road to the Library of Celsus, almost entirely rebuilt by Viennese archaeologists.
  • On gazing towards the hill, we will see the Temple of Hadrian, the Scholastica baths and the Slope Houses.
  • Before going back to Izmir on our bus, we will stop briefly to rest and make some purchases.
