Description An opportunity to visit a charming place, a short distance from Rome, a magnificent castle where time seems to stand still and a fascinating hamlet with striking views of the lake below.

What we will see
  • Odescalchi Castle (interior visit): Pope's Hall,
  • City of Bracciano (free time)

What we will do
  • We leave the port of Civitavecchia and head for the southern shores of Lake Bracciano, a few kilometres from Rome, where one of the most impressive feudal residences in Europe, the majestic Odescalchi Castle commands a superb position overlooking the lake.
  • The construction of the castle started in the second half of the 15th century and it is the ideal combination of military and civil architecture. The castle still belongs to the Odescalchi family and since 1952 it has been open to the public. The castle unveils its six centuries of history through antique arms, furnishings and paintings, books and manuscripts, decorations and frescoes.
  • We visit various halls including the Pope's Hall, where Pope Sixtus IV took refuge during the plague that was raging in Rome, the Hall of Hercules where there is part of the arms collection that was started by Prince Ladislao Odescalchi in the 19th century and the secret garden, overlooking Lake Bracciano and surrounded by the old castle walls.
  • At the end of the visit, our guide accompanies us to the hamlet of Bracciano, the medieval nucleus of houses that developed around the castle.
  • We wander along the narrow streets and take in the splendid views of the lake.
  • Before returning to the port, we have some free time to bid farewell to this typical hamlet, each in their own way.
