In a nutshell

Visit two of the most beautiful towns in Italy: Finalborgo and Noli on the same excursion. Wandering along the narrow streets of their medieval center feels like you're traveling back in time. You can expect impressive fortresses, Renaissance buildings, Baroque basilicas and noble towers.

Main stops
  • Finalborgo: San Giovanni Castle, San Biagio Basilica, Santa Caterina Convent, external visits
  • Noli: Torre del Canto and Torre del Comune, medieval walls, San Paragorio Cathedral

The programme
  • Your trip begins in the alleys of Finalborgo. They were protected from the Genoese and Saracens by the medieval walls and, from above, the San Giovanni Castle.
  • The façade of the baroque San Biagio Basilica is incomplete. The slightly leaning bell tower is from the 15th century. Not far from here is the Santa Caterina Complex, built in 1359 by the Marquises of Carretto, who ruled Finalborgo for many centuries.
  • Second stop: Noli. Did you know that in the 13th century this was an Independent Maritime Republic allied with Genoa against Venice and Pisa? It is even mentioned by Dante in Canto 4 of Purgatory.
  • Wander through the “caruggi” of the old town. Among the churches and noble palaces you'll also see sections of the Medieval walls. Only four of 72 of the original towers now remain. Look for the trapezoidal Torre del Canto and the Torre del Comune, with its swallow-tailed merlons.
  • Final stop San Paragorio, one of the most ancient and best preserved Romanesque churches in Liguria.
