Description A unique opportunity to immerse ourselves (literally!) in Iceland's traditions in the comfort of an exclusive spa complex, sampling products created using unusual techniques and admiring extraordinary scenery.

What we will see
  • Hveragerdi thermal baths
  • Ljósafoss hydroelectric power station
  • Laugarvatn and Fontana spa
  • Geothermal bakery and local product tasting
  • Thingvellir National Park
  • Hengill volcano

What we will do
  • We will leave Reykjavík and travel inland until we reach Hveragerdi thermal baths where we will stop briefly before continuing our journey.
  • We will travel alongside the river Sogid and cross Ljósafoss hydroelectric power station, which dominates the river and has been operational since 1937.
  • We will continue across the fertile, cultivated land that extends along the south coast of Iceland until we reach Laugarvatn, a small settlement on the shores of the lake of the same name.
  • It has been a popular place since 1929 for visitors wishing to benefit from the healing properties of its natural steam baths. We too will have the chance to enjoy them but in a more modern guise when we indulge in two hours of complete relaxation at the Fontana spa, where we will be pampered and invigorated by the therapeutic power of the springs.
  • With thermal hot tubs and traditional natural steam saunas, nature meets ancestral customs in this wellness centre, and while we enjoy a soak we can hear the gurgling of the thermal springs beneath us.
  • Next we will visit the centre's 'geothermal bakery', where typical rye bread is baked in a traditional way: under black sand from the lake kept hot by natural geothermal energy!
  • There we will have the opportunity to taste some local products before leaving Laugarvatn and continuing on our journey.
  • Our next destination will be Thingvellir National Park, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its immeasurable geological interest and unique natural characteristics formed by the meeting of two tectonic plates.
  • We will stop at a viewpoint and admire the land that witnessed the establishment of the country's first parliament in the year 930, hence it is considered an almost sacred site.
  • We will then head towards Hengill volcano and stop at a viewpoint on its slopes where we can take in vistas of the countless bubbling sulphur springs, fumaroles and mystical pools of water.
  • Then we will return to Reykjavík passing surreal scenery reminiscent of lunar landscapes, created by the powerful volcanic phenomena that affect the island.

What you need to know
  • We recommend that you book early because only a limited number of places are available.
  • This excursion is conducted in English.
  • Bring swimwear and a towel. Swimsuits and towels can be rented (at your own expense). The changing rooms at Fontana Spa are European-style (not private). Iceland has a strict code of hygiene and guests are required to shower without swimwear before entering the pool.
