An evocative trekking in the rocky necropolis of Pantalica, one of the most important naturalistic-archaeological sites in the Sicilian region.
Pantalica
We'll depart from the port of Syracuse for Vendicari to start our trekking to the ancient necropolis of Pantalica, one of the most important archaeological naturalistic sites in Sicily. Located on a plateau surrounded by canyons, the site has a large surface area that crosses the territories of Sortino, Ferla, Cassaro, Buscemi and Palazzo Acreide. Pantalica is on a limestone hill overlooking the deep ravines and the rivers Anapo and Calcinara that converge here. This is the largest complex of rock tombs of Sicily. In fact, the prehistoric necropolis of the Sicilians, from the thirteenth to the seventh century BC, with its approximately 5,000 caves, sometimes ordered up to seven stories and the many Byzantine churches, testifies that Pantalica was one of the most impressive prehistoric settlements in Europe. Starting from the entrance to the Citadel Maccari adjacent to the San Lorenzo beach, in addition to the cemetery you can visit the Citadel, the Trigona, and as our last stop we'll see the tuna-fishing nets of Vendicari. It will be a fantastic experience not to be missed!
