The programme
  • We leave the port by coach and immediately have the chance to admire lovely views of the city starting from the amazing Cuevas de Los Tres Ojos, a series of large natural caves, scattered with freshwater lagoons and a mysterious sulphur lake, which is said to be bottomless, located in the crater of an extinct volcano. This charming place, embellished by a myriad of stalactites and stalagmites, was already used by the Taino indios during Pre-Colombian times for religious ceremonies.
  • We then enjoy a walk in the colonial part of the city, known as Ciudad Colonial, the first still-existing settlement created by Christopher Columbus and other Spanish explorers upon their arrival in the New World and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1990. It is home to the most significant constructions built during the colonial period.
  • We also seeAlcázar de Colón, a monumental two-storey building commissioned by Christopher Columbus’ son, Diego, between 1510 and 1514 as well as Museo de las Casas Reales and the Panteón Nacional, where the remains of famous people in the history of the Dominican Republic are buried.
  • Our next stop is the cigar museum and factory to see how Dominican cigars are made and can be bought to take home.
  • On our way back to the port, we will briefly stop to take a few photos of the Presidential palace.
