Thorarinsstaðir, photo stop at the archaeological site
Skalanes, visit to the nature reserve with wild animal sightings
Skalanes, refreshments with typical dishes
What we will do
We arrive at Thorarinsstaðir by coach, where we immediately stop for a quick visit to a major archaeological site with relics from the first settlements in Iceland. Here a stave church and a graveyard were discovered, that were erected by Christians to consecrate a pagan cemetery.
We continue our excursion through grassy valleys surrounded by high mountains, in an area punctuated by a handful of now abandoned farms where we can immerse ourselves in the peaceful nature, following streams and admiring the beauty of the landscape.
Skalanes is a private reserve of 1250 hectares with an adjoining cultural centre. It was created as a centre for study and research into the environment and Icelandic cultural history, as well as a model for sustainable tourism. The reserve is home to around 47 species of bird and offers a unique opportunity to spot reindeer, seals and, more rarely, whales off the coast. Near the small lake there is a colony of eiders which fill the air with their graceful calls and bright colours. Their feathers are regularly collected when the young leave their nests.
Before returning to the ship we sample delicious refreshments with traditional Icelandic dishes.
