Description A truly unique and unmissable excursion combining history, art, literature, food and wine: a visit to the historic village of Bolgheri in the heart of the Livorno Maremma among vineyards and olive grove where time seems to have stood still between the places where the poet Carducci grew up and the harmony of stone buildings and cobbled alleyways. We then reach the Argentiera estate where we enjoy a tasting session featuring excellent wines that have made the region famous all over the world.

What we will see
  • Walking tour of Bolgheri: red brick castle, alleyways, ancient buildings, church, Giosuè Carducci childhood home, San Guido oratory
  • Historic Argentiera estate: lush Mediterranean greenery, vineyards and olive groves
  • Tour of the cellar: tasting session featuring prestigious wine and local products

What we will do
  • We leave the port of Livorno behind us accompanied by our guide on a coach headed to the historic village of Bolgheri a few km inland from the Etruscan coast and surrounded by the Livorno Maremma filled with vineyards and olive groves.
  • Once there, we start our walking tour of the town boasting ancient alleyways that take us back in time and wander around the shops selling food, wine and handicrafts.
  • We admire the exterior of the magnificent red brick castle, an imposing manor of Medieval origin standing at the end of a cypress-lined avenue. The most striking element is the rectangular tower characterised by a pointed archway leading to the town and displaying the coat of arms of the Della Gherardesca family, who have owned it ever since the 13th century.
  • We walk along the characteristic cobbled alleyways and admire the typical ancient stone and brick palaces of the town adorned with colourful geraniums.
  • We proceed and stop in front of some of the most important historic places such as the church, Giosuè Carducci's childhood home and the San Guido oratory, a small oval church made famous by Carducci’s poem “Davanti S. Guido”.
  • But Bolgheri is also famous worldwide for its excellent red wines boasting the “Bolgheri DOC” mark. This is why, after visiting the town, we head back to our coach, drive along one of Tuscany's typical wine roads to reach the historic Argentiera estate where vineyards are surrounded by lush Mediterranean vegetation with roads lined with century-old pine trees and olive groves forming an enchanting scent-filled scenario.
  • What appears before our eyes is a harmonious combination of strong elegant nature and the patient handiwork of men who have remodelled it to produce top-class wines.
  • We also visit the new estate cellar where we are taken through the entire winemaking process and where we enjoy a guided tasting session of prestigious wines paired off with tasty local products.
  • After visiting the Argentiera estate, we board our coach again to return to the ship.
